Hot/cold packs

Instructions on how to make your own hot/cold packs

This is an affordable way to make reusable and low energy hot/cold packs. They make great gifts because one size fits all. For each 2- pack, you will need 2 squares of colorful material (12x24 sq in) suitable for making bedsheets, appropriate colored thread, dried feed corn, and any fragrant oil (optional).

Take each 12x24 square and cut it into four equal lengths. Sew two of them together inside out, leaving one side open. Repeat with the remaining two. Next, fill each bag with dried feed corn until 80% full. Sew the remaining sides closed. Check for leaks or holes.

Apply 2-4 drops of the fragrant oil to the outside of the bag and let it dry completely. To use as a heating pad, pop it in the microwave or freeze it to use as a cold pack. See below for step by step instructions and other resources.

Can you wash these or will the corn swell up and ruin it?

no, don't use water. You can wipe them down with baby wipes and/ or frebreeze them. They really don't seem to get dirty or smelly. Have fun!

Personally, I've always made mine with beans. A) they don't burn like rice can and, and B) there's no funny smell, and I also use dried herbs in mine, like lavender and lemon grass. But I have a TON of essential oils i need to use up, so I will be trying this suggestions out for sure.

oh, never tried beans, but I guess the principle would be the same. As I said previously, tho, I have never had a problem with odor. I do like the dried herbs addition.
