Rookie Takes All

Rookie golfer Anna Nordgvist just won the LPGA Tour Presented By Rolex. It is the first year for this tour and Rolex was lucky enough to be named presenting sponsor. With 1.5 million as the prize, any one associated with the tour is bound to benefit financially. The tour was held in Houston, Texas at the Houstonian Golf and Country Club and was played from November 19th to November 22. Anna was a student at Arizona State when she turned pro in the fall of her junior year after she was named the leading amateur at the British Opens last year. She also won the LPGA championship by four strokes this past summer. It was her first major event as a professional.

Rolex has a long history with professional golf. In 1967, Arnold Palmer was presented with a gold Rolex to honor his achievements. In 1994, Rolex became the official timepiece of the PGA.

Women's Golf

The origins of golf is unclear, although it has been speculated that Mary, Queen of Scots played the game in the 16th century. Regardless, the first known women's golf tournament was held in Scotland in 1811. In the 1930's numerous women's tournaments were played, but it wasn't until 1944 that the game was organized and promoted with the establishment of the Women's Professional Golf Association. That club evolved into the current Ladies Professional Golf Association in 1950 and women's golf has enjoyed increasing popularity since then. Golf is an intricate game that has style and presence. Many people everyday would like to learn to play and often pay hundreds of dollars for lessons.

Anna Nordgvist

Anna

Anna Nordgvist was born in Eskilstuna, Sweden in 1987. She played seven different sports before deciding on golf. She was an amateur player in Europe and, then, the United States while attending Arizona State. She only attended two and half years before she immediately turned professional after she finished the LPGA qualifying tournament. She is a twenty-two year old who recently claimed the prize of 1.5 million dollars and her career is just beginning. Young women like Anna who succeed are great role models for our young girls. In a world where emaciated models are thrust into the limelight as the ideal, it is very refreshing to find natural women who compete so well.
