Swimming Is Not A Sport, It's Survival

Swimming
My uncle is a funny guy. He has a unique way of thinking and he once told me that swimming is not a sport, it is survival. I guess he is right. If you are in a body of water, you better know how to swim. I love to swim, it is my favorite type of exercise for many reasons. The number one reason is because it doesn't feel like exercise. It just feels like fun. Living in Florida, I have plenty of opportunity to spend time in or near the water. I have lived near the water since I was a small child. I have a special affinity for water creatures and I feel most comfortable when I am near the water. Before I was born, my great grandfather owned Clearwater Beach, located on the west coast of Florida. He was also the mayor of Clearwater and, for reasons unknown to me, decided to donate the land to the city. So, due to altruistic reasons, I am not financially well off.
When I was a teenager, ( a few years ago ), I took up surfing. That was the beginning of my reverence for the water. Even just standing on the beach watching the waves break, I am in awe of their power. Now I mostly just boogie board or body surf, but I still love it and it is one of the best ways to get fit.
Losing Weight
Losing weight is simple. In order to do so, you must expend more calories than you take in. The first step is knowing how many calories that you take in per day. Most people have no idea, I didn't until I started paying attention. How many calories you expend per day depends on many things, including your body type, your metabolism, and your level of activity.
Your body type is important. Many people believe that overweight people are that way because they are lazy and gluttonous. This is not true for the most part. Many overweight people have a problem with their thyroid, which is the organ that regulates weight. Also, body type often is hereditary. This doesn't mean that these people can't get fit, it is just that it will be more difficult. Everyone knows someone that can eat as much as they want without gaining weight. These are the people that usually have been blessed with a high metabolism and a slender body type. I comfort myself with the knowledge that thinner people show their age sooner. Yes, it's true, skinny people get more wrinkles!
Metabolism is how quickly your body uses fuel (food). There are ways to increase your metabolism, so do not despair. Eating smaller meals several times a day allows your body to maintain a more balanced glucose level. If you only eat one large meal a day, your body may go into famine mode and use very little energy, thus you have a hard time losing weight. Elevated levels of physical activity over time will raise your metabolism. Plus, physical activity reduces stress, releases endorphins, and reduces your appetite! Finally, the more muscle that you carry, the more calories that you burn during rest.

All of the activities in the above table are good cardio activities. I have done all of them at some point and I can honestly say, I prefer swimming and water sports to all of them. Each of them have their place for all around balanced fitness, but swimming works every muscle in your body if done right. In addition, I find that I do not even notice the time going by when I am in the water, so I end up exercising longer. Growing up in Florida has made it very easy to enjoy the water.

This article is wonderful...it has made a new woman out of me...first of all, I love to swim, but I was not aware of the slender age vs the stout age...that means that a 65 year old woman of slender build has more wrinkles than me...whoopie, that makes me feel great...All kidding aside, I like the article and the info on calorie burning...thank you again for interesting writings. Also the smaller meals 6 times a day is good for diabetic patients...good job
Swimming is great, doesn't stress the joints out. Good hub.
Informative reading. Prefer the swimming pool to swim in keep the sea for fishing... Look forward to reading more of your hubs.
It's true, swimming does not feel like exercise. When I'm done though, every muscle knows it just got fooled. :)
I have also always lived on the coast. The Great Northern Coast, that is. The Great Lakes have far fewer dolphins, but also far fewer hurricanes.
Thanks for the hub, you did a great job with it.

Swimming is fun, and great exercise.. something for everyone!!
I am glad that you are still young hehe *(teen ager a few years back), agree with your uncle too, Swimming is fun growing up in a counry where there are 7000 islands-the Philippines we swim as early as we can walk,
very nice and with humour too, smile for me, Maita
Water Exercise is Wise!
All people should swim 30 mins or an hour a week. It's a great way to tone up and sdtay healthy. You work more muscle and have a great figure, great butt, great fit back muscles, and it is an exercise to just thread water alone! Water is nature's best exercise machine! This is a fantastic hub! Well written! ; )
Where is the next nearby swimmingpool in my neigbourhood????????!!!!!! Thanks so much for your kind hub sister. I really am no glutton! but love to eat. But am a healthy eater too. Love sweet too!!! the good news is that i love swimming too. So let'g go out there and do it.
Great article. I like to swim but don't have a pool that is terribly convenient. I can drive about 15 mins. to one and I think burning calories that way would be a great idea. thanks.
Nice hub and a great title. I better start taking some time out for swimming.
I love to swim, and everyone in my family swims, but I have to admit that it really is survival. A friend of our family recently enlisted in the US Navy. We had a going away party for him at my house. He was telling us what his boot camp was going to be like. He mentioned that he was going to be doing a lot of swimming. My Youngest son told him. Dude, if you are in the Navy, stationed on a USS anything and find yourself swimming, then something has gone
terribly wrong!
Swimming is so great for your body and metabolism. I have to say that I do tend to get somewhat bored swimming longer distances. For those that think swimming doesn't seem to feel like exercise, some of that has to do with sweating. It seems like "working hard" with exercise and sweating go hand in hand, at least in our heads. Perhaps that is why most do not seem to think of swimming as "exercise." Great hub!

You are so right, swimming doesn't really feel like exercise, especially if you are doing it in the sea.
